Europe's largest infrastructure project to date is in full swing. Since 2007, the Brenner Base Tunnel – the longest underground railway connection in the world – has been under construction. Completion is planned for 2027. As part of the new railway line from Munich to Verona, goods and passengers will be transported faster through the tunnel. fischer heavy-duty anchors are used for the secure fastening of permanent and temporary attachments.
Getting people to their destinations faster, shifting freight traffic from road to rail, and reducing emissions. With these goals in mind, the Brenner Base Tunnel opens up entirely new dimensions. It runs 55 km from Innsbruck (Austria) to Franzensfeste (Italy). It also connects to the existing Innsbruck railway bypass. Including this route, the Alpine crossing is a total of 64 km long.
This makes it the longest underground railway connection in the world. Compared to the old Brenner railway route with inclines and declines, the tunnel runs flat. This is intended to increase speeds and capacities.

The centerpiece of the engineering marvel consists of two main tunnel tubes, each with a diameter of 8.1 m, running parallel at a distance of 70 m. Each tube is equipped with a single track for one-way traffic. Cross passages connect the two main tunnel tubes at intervals of 333 m and are used as escape routes. Additionally, emergency stops enhance safety. Four lateral access tunnels lead to the surface. Additional connecting tunnels provide further connectivity. Located 12 m below and centrally between the main tunnel tubes is an exploration gallery with a diameter of at least 5 m. This primarily serves for geological exploration.
Reinforcement bars, running rails, formwork elements, fastening devices for supply lines, and much more are securely and firmly fixed with fischer fastening systems. Among others, the fischer injection mortar FIS SB is used. This achieves a very high load level in non-cracked concrete, cures quickly, and allows variable anchoring depths for shorter installation times as well as reduced material usage. In the Brenner Base Tunnel, the FIS SB is used to create reliable reinforcement connections in the partition walls of the cross passages. Additionally, it is installed with various threaded rods, for example, for the rail fastening of the formwork trolley. For temporary fastenings, the construction workers also use the high-performance fischer ULTRACUT FBS II concrete screws. These are highly installation-friendly, very flexible due to three screwing depths, and suitable for multiple uses – for example, in formwork construction. Practical fischer nail anchors are also used for temporary fixings.
