Fastening expertise at work
Over more than 160 years, the factory site developed a unique structure. On approximately 20 hectares, two complete construction blocks and additional buildings are distributed, partly interlocked. The buildings partly represent different eras and building materials.

The administration and research centre dates back to the 1970s. The high-rise building is being renovated and upgraded for fire protection from July 2017 until expected completion at the end of 2018. The floors were constructed with Robertson steel cellular decks. Simply put, these are steel trapezoidal sheets filled with concrete and topped with a 5 to 6 cm thick layer of concrete topping. The concrete filled into the corrugations of the trapezoidal sheet is difficult to compact in the existing building. Therefore, an unknown concrete strength must be assumed. Steel cellular decks can only be used in multi-storey buildings if they are protected for fire safety by cladding on the underside. This is implemented in the renovation measure by a two-layer Promat cladding.

One disadvantage of the Robertson decks with fire protection cladding, however, is that supply lines within the suspended ceilings are hardly possible. All the more convincing to the building owner was the concept proposed by fischer: fischer fastening systems anchor the support strips of the two-layer Promat cladding for fire protection. Below this, a fischer installation rail grid system FUS is installed, which serves as a support system for all further installation systems.

Scope:
Use of the FUS installation system on a planned rail length of over 9 km and 21,000 fischer FBS 6 concrete screws and 12,200 FHB II composite anchors.
The Promat boards with retaining strips are fixed to the ribs of the ceilings using the fischer concrete screw FBS. The load-bearing capacity of the installation rails is taken over by the injection anchor Highbond FHB II. Challenging for both fastening systems are the existing edge distance of only 30 mm and the unknown concrete quality, while simultaneously considering the fire requirements for the fastening elements. In advance, the planners and fischer experts therefore conducted numerous pull-out tests, which led to an independent expert opinion. This cleared the way to use the Highbond anchor FHB II and the concrete screw FBS 6 for fastening.

“Such a renovation project with this ceiling construction is not an everyday occurrence,” explains Olaf Schinkel, technical field service employee at fischer. “The pull-out tests all worked well and convinced the expert.” The innovative core of the fischer concept lies in the fire-tested mounting rail system FUS used. This is initially installed in a basic grid on the ribs of the Robertson ceiling with the Highbond system FHB II. Through the interaction of the force-controlled expanding composite anchor FHB II with the injection mortar FIS HB, it achieves the highest load values in cracked concrete.

Crosswise distribution rails are fixed onto the FUS rails. This special construction achieves the highest level of flexibility. Because now cables can be routed down and tightened at any desired points. Otherwise, the supply lines would have had to be routed between the Promat boards, and the boards would have had to be "perforated" at individual points. The fire protection of the ceiling could no longer be guaranteed.

The FUS system enables easy and particularly fast installation thanks to the special rail geometry as well as the clever, pre-assembled connecting and fastening elements. With a "Clix" mechanism and a 90° rotation on the pre-assembled fastener, the multifunctional components snap into place almost with a single hand movement. The system is fire-tested and therefore also suitable for use in fire and rescue routes. This way, fischer offers a coherent concept with clever products. One of a total of three floors of the existing building is currently being upgraded to be fire-safe with this solution.
