Anchors for the tallest statue in the world
The "Statue of Unity" is about twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty in New York City. The structure, completed in three and a half years, is located near the city of Vadodara, in the westernmost Indian state of Gujarat. It is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a leader from Gujarat in the struggle for India's independence. Due to his role as an activist against British colonial rule and in the subsequent founding of the state in 1947, he was celebrated as the "Iron Man" of the country.
The dimensions of the project are immense. Together with its pedestal, the statue rises even 240 meters above ground level and stands in an area of two hectares, surrounded by an artificial lake measuring twelve square meters. The site is equipped with modern transport infrastructure, such as expressways, an improved railway system, and helicopter landing pads. In addition, the construction of 7-star hotels and further infrastructure measures are planned. The construction consists of two reinforced concrete cylinders inside, surrounded by a steel skeleton. On the outside, the statue is clad with 8-millimeter thick bronze plates. The engineering firm Larsen & Toubro as well as the construction company Turner relied on numerous fischer fastening products as contractors.
