Each five facade and roof surfaces are clad with large-format natural stone slabs according to the tender. Their dimensions range from 0.5 m x 1.0 m to 1.5 x 2.0 m, with a thickness of 3 cm. Almost every format is different. On the installation plan, each slab was marked with its own position number. Staggered joints were also included in the tender. The facade construction company Keratek from Zagreb, Croatia was commissioned with the installation and delivery of the natural stone slabs for the approximately 400 m² large ventilated facade and the approximately 350 m² sized roof. The natural stone Travertin Romano was used. The company Mramor Commerce from Jurdani, Croatia cut the ordered stone blocks into the desired formats and delivered them to the construction site as needed and according to the installation plan. The responsible architectural office was “ZDL Arhitekti” Rijeka under the responsibility of Dipl. Ing. Siniša Zdjelar.

The installation of the roof surfaces and vertical walls

For a secure hold of the rather porous stone with relatively low strength, a lateral fastening system with clamps and transfer of the dead weight directly via support on horizontal BWM load-bearing profiles is used.

The concrete slab on the sloping roof surfaces with an inclination of approximately 30° was coated with bitumen. Then the facade installers mounted L-brackets and material for thermal separation. This was followed by the installation of mineral wool with a thickness of 20 cm. The BWM load-bearing profiles ATK 100 were mounted on the L-brackets. The facade installers then applied sealing material, which is secured by BWM hat profiles ATK 103 V3 and a self-adhesive tape. Special care was taken with the connections at the windows. This prevents water from penetrating into the building.

 

Special profiles were also used, which BWM specifically developed and delivered for this project. In general, BWM manufactures customized solutions tailored individually to the customer's requirements upon request. A horizontal support profile from BWM's ATK 102 product family was mounted on the vertical hat profiles. The facade builders inserted an EPDM profile into this. As a result, the panel later rests elastically. This was followed by the installation of a second support profile from BWM Fassadensysteme. Depending on the panel size, this was attached at half height or above the panel. The profiles have a slot into which a clip is inserted laterally and were used in lengths corresponding to the respective panel width. The panels are installed with an open joint width of 10 to 12 mm. Similar to other applications where BWM technology is used, each individual panel can be replaced if necessary.
All sides of the entrance area and balcony are clad with HPL panels 15 cm wide. The total area covered is approximately 150 m². The installers bonded the HPL panels to the BWM substructure ATK 100 Minor using a suitable adhesive.

Execution of the Facade Surfaces

The facade surfaces are designed as ventilated stone facades with 16 cm thick mineral wool and a vapor-permeable, diffusion-open black fleece.

Approximately every 50 cm, the facade installers mounted the vertical T-profiles ATK 100 Minor (basic construction) and on top of these the horizontal support profiles ATK 102. The horizontal support profiles ATK 102 with EPDM rubber bands and clamps were inserted laterally into the slots of the stone panels. A ventilation mesh is installed at the bottom of the facade.

The result is a building whose architecture, construction details, and VHF stone facade are unique and securely hold.
