Achieve ambitious goals – with reliable fire protection
Promoting mobility, tourism, and the economy – these are the goals of Istanbul Airport, which will be the largest airport in the world upon completion. Numerous fischer FireStop products were used to protect the lives of passengers and airport users as well as the infrastructure in the event of a fire outbreak.

After the first construction phase of Istanbul Airport was successfully completed from 2014 to 2018, the airport already handles around 90 million passengers per year. In five years, on an area of approximately 1.4 million m², two runways, an air traffic control tower, and a passenger terminal were built. When all construction phases are completed, the passenger capacity is expected to more than double to over 200 million. Six runways on a total construction area of about 76.5 million m² will enable the safe transport of passengers to their destinations.
The client is the joint venture iGA, which was established for the construction of the airport. The cooperation consists of the companies Kalyon, Cengiz, Mapa, and Limak, which operate in Turkey and worldwide in various industries such as construction, energy, tourism, mining, as well as port and airport management. As an important safety measure for people, assets, and infrastructure, Istanbul Airport is fully equipped with fischer FireStop solutions for passive fire protection, which help prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases in the event of a fire. Safety in application in Turkey is ensured by assessments according to European standards, such as the European Technical Assessment (ETA). The installation companies commissioned for the technical building equipment (MNG, EHA, Qubi, 3Gen, Redgon, and many more) installed the easy-to-install and highly effective products from the fischer range for passive fire protection in the terminal, the tower, and all other utility buildings of Istanbul Airport – all constructed in a skeleton structure with reinforced concrete.

The products used for sealing the penetration openings include the FCPS panel system – a stone wool core coated with the ablative sealant FPC. The FCPS is designed to provide up to four hours of compartmentation and two hours of temperature resistance. Additionally, one-component, water-based acrylic emulsions were used. This includes the fischer FiAM, which ensures up to five hours of compartmentation by forming a highly insulating barrier for fire sealing when exposed to fire. Also used was the intumescent one-component mass FiGM, made from a graphite-based material that foams under high pressure. Through intumescence, it expands up to 20 times its own volume when fire breaks out and hardens into an elastic, flexible fire seal.
