Safe escape routes thanks to strong bolt anchors
The first high-speed railway line is being constructed in Mexico. During tunnel work, steel anchors from the fischer group are used to secure the escape routes for future passengers.
To reduce traffic congestion in Mexico City and shift traffic from road to rail, the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) (political secretariat of the government in Mexico for communication and transport) has been building the new line since 2014. The connection runs between the capital and Toluca City, a city with about half a million inhabitants, approximately 65 kilometres southwest of Mexico City. 
In addition to the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT), the Secretaría de Energía (SENER) (Secretariat/Ministry of Energy) is also responsible for the planning. The project managers awarded the contract for the construction and equipment of the route to a consortium of several companies. 
Almost the entire route runs above ground, with the track elevated on concrete supports. Only a section of 4.7 kilometres runs underground through the tunnelled mountain landscape of the Sierra de las Cruces. For this, a twin-tube tunnel is being constructed. Its two tubes consist of prefabricated concrete elements. To meet safety criteria, the planners have provided emergency walkways in the tunnel. These lead passengers to the emergency exits. This allows people in dangerous situations to leave the tunnel. These walkways were reinforced with steel plates, which are securely fixed in concrete using fischer FAZ II bolt anchors in size 20/60.

With the fischer bolt anchor FAZ II, heavy loads can be secured in cracked concrete. The steel anchor can be used particularly flexibly and is easy and safe to install. When tightening the nut, the conical bolt is pulled into the expansion clip and firmly clamps it against the drill hole wall. This way, the bolt anchor safely transfers the loads into the concrete and enables the highest load-bearing capacity.

Ecological aspects played an important role in the planning of the route and the construction work. For example, the responsible parties replaced the initially planned side supports for the concrete track with central supports. This way, thousands of trees could be spared from being cut down. The only tunnel on the new line was also built with the intention of preserving the natural mountain landscape of the Sierra de las Cruces.
