Facade shines in new splendor

In hospitals, the investment needs in facility management are always immense. For good healthcare and optimal healing success, not only well-trained staff and modern equipment are important. The structural condition of the facilities is also of great significance.

Thus, the client of a new hospital – one of the largest private Mexican healthcare companies – launched an expansion and development program unprecedented in the history of healthcare in Mexico. Part of this is the renovation of the hospital in the Mexican area of El Pedregal, located in the Tlalpan district in the south of Mexico City. The project includes two hospital towers with a height of 50 m and a third tower with a height of 27 m. The premises are being expanded by more than 35,000 m² and the complex is being redesigned. An important part of the project is the redesign and renewal of the facade. The total facade area amounts to around 20,000 m².

In line with sustainability principles, the exterior walls made of concrete are insulated with mineral wool boards during the facade renovation. To fasten these boards to the concrete, the executing craftsmen use a special fischer system. The fischer Power Drive powder-actuated fastening tool is used, which is currently exclusively available on the market in Mexico, in the F35 and F45 versions. The tool is used with various steel nails and strips with powder cartridges in three performance classes. The high setting energy of the powder-actuated tool as well as the high-strength steel nails ensure secure anchoring in concrete, steel, and solid brick. The three cartridge strengths and six-level power adjustment allow flexible use of the system. Fasteners up to 62 millimeters long can be driven in without pre-nailing. "Our customer used our powder-actuated fastening tool especially because it enables faster installation speed and better results than the usual fastening processes," emphasizes Juan Manuel Fernández, Coordinator for Engineering at fischer Mexico.

To anchor the facade substructure system in concrete, the craftsmen use the fischer bolt anchor FWA, which achieves high load capacities with its standard anchoring depth. This results in fewer fastening points and smaller anchor plates being required, allowing installations to be carried out in less time and with less material. This helps keep costs low. The low anchoring and drill hole depth also reduces the time required for installation and increases flexibility. When applying the torque, the cone bolt is pulled into the expansion clip and expands it against the drill hole wall. The FWA then unfolds its full effectiveness and ensures a secure hold.

For fastening lighter loads, the fischer universal plug UX proved to be the right choice. The plastic plug made of high-quality nylon expands in solid building materials and knots in hollow and panel building materials. The fastening sets with screws, eyes, and hooks offer the optimal solution for almost all applications.

Fire protection is a topic of outstanding importance in public buildings and hospitals. To minimize danger to life and limb, building materials are required that ensure the necessary fire resistance in an emergency. Therefore, among other things, the fischer Rapid Fire Seal RFS 640 is used during renovation in Mexico. This is a one-component, water-based, fire-resistant sealant that provides protection against smoke and fire at construction joints and penetrations in vertical and horizontal applications. The fischer RFS guarantees up to three hours of fire resistance.

For interior and exterior work, the use of silicone is often important. This is also the case here, in this example. The contractors prefer to use the fischer sealant DBSA for the work. The low-odor premium construction silicone based on alkoxy convinces with its high adhesion spectrum on a variety of substrates. It is also characterised by very low volume shrinkage and low odour development. The construction silicone is suitable for window sealing and for movement and connection joints on walls and roofs. Thanks to its fungistatic effect, the fischer DBSA is ideal for the sanitary area.

In addition to the appropriate and economical product solutions, we also convinced our clients in the project with our technical support. From planning to on-site installation to successful project completion, we accompany our partners through all construction phases.
