For the first time in 500 years, a large part of the Alte Prokuratien (Procuratie Vecchie) at St. Mark’s Square in Venice is being opened to the public. The aim is to create a stronger connection between the famous building, the city, and its visitors. The Procuratie Palace was restored over a period of five years. To reinforce the ceilings and replace old fastenings such as wooden dowels and riveted joints, as well as for many other applications, fischer fastening products were used.

Three interconnected buildings frame St. Mark’s Square in Venice, known as the Procuratie. To the north are the Alte Prokuratien (Procuratie Vecchie), to the west the Napoleonic Wing, and to the south the Neue Prokuratien (Procuratie Nuove). They served as the residence and workplace for the Procurators of Saint Mark. These city officials held the highest-ranking position in the Republic of Saint Mark after the Doges (heads of state). Their task was to manage the assets of St. Mark’s Basilica.
The work included the renovation of the first and second floors housing the offices of the insurance company. The layout and access to the rooms were reorganized. Additionally, the third floor was renovated. This floor houses The Human Safety Net, an international, non-profit Generali foundation supporting disadvantaged people. On the third floor, public access was created to the exhibition and event spaces, work areas, an auditorium, and a café. The restoration work employed some of the most traditional Venetian craftsmanship techniques: terrazzo on the arches opening to the walls, pastelone floors, limewash on the brick surfaces, marmorino, and Venetian plaster.

Due to the enormous importance of the project, great skill and expertise were required not only in the architectural design but also in the selection of products for the careful and sensitive restoration. The company Sacaim SpA, which has been active in Venice since 1920, was primarily responsible for this. This responsible general contractor has already collaborated on numerous projects with the fischer group, which supplied the fastening solutions for the restoration project.
The restoration of the Alte Prokuratien is part of the celebrations for Generali’s 190th anniversary and a broad renovation initiative for the area around St. Mark’s Square, which also includes, for example, the recently reopened Royal Gardens. The premises served as the Italian headquarters of the insurance company until 1989. After the restoration work, Generali will now return to the Alte Prokuratien. Thanks to the successful completion of the project, the history of the building can be preserved. At the same time, the Alte Prokuratien will be opened to the global public for the first time and guided into the future with a new use.
