More than 150 companies and research institutions with over 5,000 employees are primarily engaged with the topics of energy, mobility, and sustainability on the EUREF campus in Berlin-Schöneberg. Solutions for the energy transition are not only developed but also actively demonstrated: since 2014, the campus has been meeting the CO2 climate targets for the year 2045, among other things through climate-neutral energy supply, an intelligent energy network, and energy-efficient buildings.

From 2018 to 2020, House 23-24 was developed on the 5.5-hectare urban quarter under the clientship of EUREF AG (Berlin). The responsible architect and client representative was EUREF Consulting Gesellschaft von Architekten und Ingenieuren mbH (Berlin). The general contractor commissioned was the WOLFF & MÜLLER Group headquartered in Stuttgart. The new building has approximately 18,000 square meters of total area. Of this, GASAG AG, one of the leading energy service providers in the Berlin-Brandenburg region, uses about two-thirds as its new headquarters. The new occupant on the EUREF Campus focuses its range of services for gas, electricity, and heat supply primarily on renewable energies and efficient technologies. Also pioneering is the sustainable, ventilated curtain wall facade of the new GASAG AG headquarters. Johannes Tücks, Board Member of EUREF AG and Chief Architect of the EUREF Campus Berlin and Düsseldorf, states: “Sustainable architecture must be considered in the details throughout the entire chain from production, durability, to dismantling and recycling! Here, as architects, we rely on partners who develop and offer convincing solutions for us.”

This also includes fischer BWM fastening and substructure solutions, which securely anchor the futuristic aluminium cladding of the modern building envelope to the supporting structure. On a façade area of a total of 5,000 m², panels made of Novelis FF2® coloured aluminium with a thickness of 2 mm in various shades of grey were installed during the execution period from 2019 to 2020. The advantages of the material lie in the diverse design possibilities as well as in its functionality. The FF2® panels impress with colour and gloss retention, non-combustibility (A1), ease of installation, and cost-effectiveness. The material and colour effect are very durable, and the maintenance effort during building operation is low. As the consultant for the appropriate façade cladding, W. Hartmann & Co. (GmbH & Co. KG), headquartered in Oststeinbek, was involved, a system house for aluminium. "The focus of the architect and client was particularly on sustainability and cost-effectiveness with demanding design," says Roman Meinhardt, who is responsible for architect consulting at W. Hartmann & Co. (GmbH & Co. KG). "Our façade cladding is aligned with these topics and we can provide the relevant information."

For the anchoring of the aluminium panels, the fischer BWM aluminium substructure ATK 100 ZeLa was used vertically as the base substructure. The system enables thermal decoupling in favour of increased energy efficiency and sustainability. The passivhaus-certified ZeLa holder received the certificate "Passivhaus suitable component" from the Passivhaus Institute as an independent certification body. The certificate includes all key values (point thermal bridge loss coefficients) and documents the unique position of the substructure compared to conventional, market-standard wall constructions. The horizontal hat profile 601 was attached to the base substructure ATK 100 ZeLa. The facade builders then fixed a vertically oriented hat profile, specially developed for the project, as the third layer of the substructure. This special construction allowed the vertical surfaces and pilasters made of aluminium to be securely anchored. Rivets were used to fasten the facade panels. At the parapets, the aluminium panels were riveted directly. In addition to the smooth facade panels, edge parts were also installed on the cornices, which were fastened with the Clip 107 from the ATK 100 system.

“Both our product and service offerings matched the requirements of the project. The special features of the order included delivering a customized customer solution and several variants of substructure profiles, up to three-layered, to the construction site,” says the responsible fischer BWM field sales representative Michael Noack. “In addition to the suitable products, our services, with which we successfully supported our partners through various construction phases, also contributed to the successful collaboration.” Jörg Granz, the project manager responsible for the contracted façade construction company WF Bau GmbH (Magdeburg), adds: “fischer BWM supported us, among other things, with consulting and development of the special solution as well as with customer- and project-specific calculations of the façade system.” The very high degree of prefabrication of the façade system by fischer BWM also enabled particularly fast installation of the façade cladding, according to Jörg Granz. The façade builders of WF Bau GmbH (Magdeburg) installed the substructure and insulation from scaffolding. The cladding was fastened from company-owned suspended platforms.

The ventilated curtain wall facade fits the sustainable overall concept of the new building. The new GASAG AG headquarters has been designed as a KfW Efficiency House 55 with a very high energy standard. This means that the primary energy demand is only 55% and the transmission heat loss is only 70% of the maximum values permitted by the Energy Saving Ordinance. Factors here include triple glazing, thermal insulation, the use of smart metering (digital electricity meters to record electricity consumption), as well as locally generated renewable energy. Not only in building operation but also in the construction process, EUREF AG and its commissioned architects placed great importance on sustainability by causing as few emissions as possible. On the ground floor, there is a showroom on the topic of the energy transition for visitors. The two-story underground car park houses, in addition to 140 car parking spaces, 70 parking spaces and charging options for e-cars, which residents can also use in the evenings and on weekends. In addition, changing rooms and showers for cyclists are connected to the garage. The roof areas and terraces have been greened. Visually and functionally, the facade integrates into the overall concept of building 23-24 on the EUREF campus, where the future topic of sustainability meets a futuristic design.
