fischer/BWM facade systems secure residential building Äril Stockholm

Steel and stone stylishly combined
Diverse and colorful facades shape Stockholm’s streets and residential areas like mosaics, creating constantly new and exciting impressions. This tradition is reflected in the new apartment building in the Norra Djurgårdsstaden area. The architecture was particularly inspired by the industrial history of the region. The apartment building houses 76 apartments and was constructed from 2018 to 2019. The owner is the housing cooperative Äril Båtbyggarparken (Stockholm). The responsible construction company is Tobin Properties AB (Stockholm), which focuses on the planning and development of residential properties in Sweden and has been part of the publicly listed real estate company Klövern since 2019 (headquartered in Stockholm). The design and planning come from the architectural firm Semrén & Månsson Architects AB (headquartered in Göteborg).

Due to the different cladding materials of the modern building envelope, the architecture reveals a new effect from different perspectives. The residential building consists of two directly adjacent building sections, one of which is clad on a facade area of 530 m² with corten steel panels. This weather-resistant structural steel with its unique rust layer combines functional advantages such as durability and low maintenance with industrial charm as well as a warm and at the same time rugged appearance. Furthermore, the facade of the second building section is clad on an area of 1,652 m² with anthracite-coloured slate panels in two different thicknesses of 10 mm (1,530 m² area) and 30 mm (95 m² area), which score points with longevity and a noble look. Additionally, a wooden cladding was installed on 1,500 m² in a typical Scandinavian red tone with a weather-resistant and moisture-repellent coating.
To securely and firmly anchor the corten steel and slate panels, the responsible executing construction company Erlandsson Bygg AB (Stockholm) relied on fischer BWM facade systems. The installed substructure solution consists of the ATK 100 ZeLa system and ATK 100 profile as the vertical base construction, on which horizontally running profiles of the ATK 103 P-20 system are mounted for the concealed fastening of the facade panels using clamp fasteners. The loads acting on the horizontal profiles from the facade are transferred to the vertical profiles and from there introduced into the supporting structure via the wall brackets.
For the 30 mm thick slate panels, the ATK 100 KL clip solution is used for fastening instead of the clamps. "Our clients from Erlandsson Bygg AB were convinced by the advantages of our ZeLa holders, which combine increased energy efficiency and sustainability in facade construction through their thermal decoupling and the static benefit of concentric load introduction," says Stefan Schrag, Market Manager of fischer BWM Fassadensysteme GmbH. The controlled sliding range additionally ensures safe thermal longitudinal expansion of the support profiles. "Furthermore, the facade holders are particularly easy and quick to install," adds Stefan Schrag. "The facade builders from Erlandsson Bygg AB fastened the holders with fischer SXR long-shaft anchors in concrete, clicked the sword in – and done. Due to the high load-bearing capacity, the number of holders required is also very low, so overall a lot of time, cost, and material can be saved."
The holders, with their slim design, fit precisely against the insulation material, ensuring that virtually no thermal bridges are created. This reliably prevents energy losses. Since the ZeLa holder meets the highest standards for energy-efficient facades, it received the certificate "Passive House Suitable Component" from the Passive House Institute as an independent certification body. Thus, the facade of the Äril multi-family house impressively combines an individual, distinctive building appearance with safety and modern technology that meets current requirements for contemporary thermal insulation.
