fischer BWM facade systems implement large-scale solar facade

During the construction of a new production site in Iggensbach (Bavaria), the company Fenecon planned a large facade solar power system for electricity generation. For the secure mounting of the photovoltaic modules, planners and contractors relied on a facade system from fischer BWM Fassadensysteme, which was further developed in cooperation with the module manufacturer Solarwatt to meet the project-specific requirements.

Fenecon is a leading manufacturer of energy storage solutions and offers systems for private households as well as for commercial, industrial, energy suppliers, and vehicle manufacturers. The solutions use the in-house energy management system FEMS based on OpenEMS. Since 2017, the company Fenecon, based in Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria, has been producing large container storage units from electric vehicle batteries. The success of the concept quickly necessitated an expansion of production. Earlier this year, the company commissioned the new site in Iggensbach, located about 30 kilometers northwest of Passau: the CarBatteryReFactory. In the future, energy storage systems made from zero-, first-, and second-life vehicle batteries will be manufactured there. The complex includes not only the production facility but also warehouses, development laboratories, and offices. The CarBatteryReFactory marks an important step towards the industrialization and mass production of large-scale energy storage systems based on electric vehicle batteries.

Fenecon planned to generate a large part of the energy for the new plant from renewable sources. Therefore, Fenecon intended to use suitable roof and facade areas for solar power production. The photovoltaic modules were to be integrated into the ventilated curtain facade. "The advantage over roof and rooftop systems is that the winter yield of a solar facade is higher, and the power output is significantly improved even in the otherwise less productive months," says Benjamin Orths, who, as an international product manager for facade systems at the fischer Group, co-managed the project.

The facade work was commissioned to Gaass Florian GmbH from Grainet in Lower Bavaria. Solar modules from our partner Solarwatt in Dresden were used. In total, 552 glass-glass solar modules of the type Solarwatt vision GM 3.0 construct were installed on an area of approximately 1,050 square meters. They deliver a peak output of 204.24 kilowatt peak (kWp). The solar modules have a general building authority approval (abZ), which allows them to be used for solar parking lot monitoring and facades without additional safety measures.

fischer BWM facade systems supported the project managers in facade planning and jointly developed a project-specific fastening solution in partnership with Solarwatt, which can be transferred to other projects. "The result is a completely secure system that can be used in all relevant areas such as residential, office, and commercial construction, provided there is an anchoring substrate," says Benjamin Orths. "With our substructure for PV systems, already sealed surfaces can thus be utilised and existing facades activated for renewable energy generation."

The special feature of the innovative construction: for the creation of high-quality architectural facades, fastening with clamps allows for the omission of disruptive visible components such as insertion rails and clamps. Additionally, the system enables a facade appearance with minimal joints. It is simultaneously a stress-free, permanent construction that securely holds the modules in the facade. The system is easy and user-friendly to install and can also be dismantled if necessary.

The new Fenecon plant is constructed as a steel structure. While the non-solar facade sections feature an insulated cassette facade, the PV modules are anchored in the supporting structure using a substructure. The vertical support profiles served as the base construction for the horizontal clamp profiles ATK 103 PV, which were attached to the vertical profiles using self-drilling screws. The PV modules with pre-assembled clamps on the back could then be hooked into the open C-profile of these horizontal elements. Benjamin Orths emphasizes: „Thanks to the pre-assembly of the clamps with special screws and their geometry precisely matched to the horizontal profile, rapid construction progress was possible.“ The size (1780 x 1052 x 40 millimeters) and the weight of the PV modules of 25.5 kilograms required extensive calculations for weight loads and wind loads. All necessary current regulations and standards were taken into account.
With the substructure for PV modules, fischer BWM facade systems enable the construction of aesthetically high-quality, safe buildings with sustainable energy production. Thanks to the permanent safety and functionality of the securely fixed solar facades, solar energy can be converted into electricity for decades without releasing emissions or consuming resources. The result is buildings that guarantee future-proof regenerative and environmentally friendly energy generation across generations.
