Secure hold for the longest bridge over the sea
New record construction in China: In October 2018, the Middle Kingdom opened the longest bridge in the world spanning the sea after nine years of construction, and currently the largest infrastructure project on water. The century-long construction stretches about 55 kilometres across the Pearl River Delta and connects the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau with the Guangdong province (city of Zhuhai) on the mainland. By crossing over the water, China optimizes mobility, exchange, and goods transport between the three largest cities in the Pearl River Delta. The bridge winds from the former British colony of Hong Kong in the east to the mainland Chinese Guangdong and the adjacent former Portuguese colony Macau in the west. It spans 35 kilometers over the water. The remaining route includes a 6.7-kilometer-long tunnel that runs up to 48 m deep beneath the seabed, as well as sections that run over artificial islands and mainland. The 22.9 km main bridge and the tunnel in the western part of the facility measure about 29.6 km. The bridge has three lanes per direction. The Pearl River Delta is partially only about 20 meters deep, which allowed the use of prefabricated stilts for large parts. The area of the underwater tunnel and three points of the cable-stayed bridge allow passage for ships.

fischer was primarily involved on site at the artificial island Zhuhai Port in the project. There, among other things, chemical anchoring systems such as the Superbond system with the RSB reaction cartridge and the high-strength epoxy resin mortar FIS EM Plus 390 S with system components were installed. Additionally, the fischer Zykon undercut anchor FZA was used.
The high-strength epoxy resin mortar FIS EM Plus 390 S for reinforcement connections and high load values in concrete is, for example, ideal for the challenging conditions in the coastal marine region, where the structure is exposed to high moisture, high temperatures, and possible corrosion from salty sea spray. To ensure its functionality in such environments, the injection mortar was extensively tested. The FIS EM Plus 390 S demonstrated its durability in moisture, temperature, aging, and long-term load tests as well as corrosion tests caused by media.
The fischer fastening solutions ensure the strength, safety, and durability of the fastenings. The easy usability of the products, which require hardly any tools for installation, was also an advantage given the challenging location of the construction site on the artificial island.
