Currently, the state road manager as client (Rijkswaterstaat) is expanding the A9 motorway in Southeast Amsterdam. The construction project is part of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere (SAA) project in the Netherlands, which aims to increase the capacities of several expressways (A1, A6, A10, and A9) and thus improve access to the Randstad area. In this process, the A9 Gaasperdammerweg between the Holendrecht and Diemen interchanges is being expanded from three to five lanes per direction plus a reversible lane.

Part of the project is the new tunnel, which will extend over three kilometres upon completion in 2020. This makes it the longest land tunnel in the Netherlands. Another special feature is that the underpass can be exited halfway through by local traffic. With a width of 73 metres, it is also the second widest land tunnel in the Netherlands. After construction is completed, it will be operated with five lanes per direction on both sides, as well as a reversible lane.

Two outermost tunnel tubes are being constructed for local traffic to and from Amsterdam Southeast. In addition, two inner tubes are planned for through traffic. A fifth tunnel tube is designated for the reversible lane. The underground central traffic artery is intended to reduce noise pollution for residents along the A9 and improve air quality. On the roof of the tunnel, a park is also being created, with completion planned for 2021. The green space is intended to connect the neighbourhoods in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and further enhance the quality of life there.

The fischer corporate group was able to successfully complete the fastening of the fire protection panels to walls and ceilings in close collaboration with the executing construction company Kaefer Construction GmbH. The purpose of the subsequently installed tunnel cladding is to protect the concrete structure in the underground traffic facility in the event of a fire. “The type of fire protection, whether panel, fire protection plaster, or coating, was determined in advance. The focus was placed, among other things, on durability, visual appearance, cost-effectiveness, and duration of installation,” says Sven Burgard, Head of Passive Fire Protection for Buildings and Tunnels at Kaefer Construction GmbH.

Ultimately, the system was tested in several fire trials to comprehensively ensure its suitability. The fischer nail anchor FNA II A4 was used, with more than 1.7 million units installed. "The fact that our FNA II A4 has been proven to be ideal for tunnel fire protection, as well as easy and quick to install, was one of the compelling arguments," emphasizes Daniel Jäger, Head of Industrial Key Account Management at fischer Deutschland Vertriebs GmbH, who significantly accompanied the project. "The FNA II also meets the high requirements for wind suction loads and durability in the project and is additionally suitable for sensitive concrete as the anchoring base." Few installation steps were sufficient for execution: The fire protection board was simply positioned on the wall or ceiling, the drill hole was created through both, and then the anchor was set time-efficiently in through-fixing installation using a pneumatic setting tool. Under load, the FNA II expands independently. The cone is pulled into the expansion clip and clamps it against the drill hole. "The FNA II is very well suited for this application because it is very easy to process. Simply drill the hole, drive in the nail anchor – and done! Once set, it guarantees its function for a very long time," confirms Sven Burgard and emphasizes: "Collaboration on a project of this size is crucial for a positive outcome. Once again, fischer has proven itself as a reliable partner in terms of quality, punctuality, and reliability."

The FNA II A4 has already been used several times in the Netherlands in the field of fire protection. It has proven itself in numerous projects. The anchor has successfully passed all fire tests conducted by the fire protection board manufacturers. "In addition to the on-time production and delivery of the large quantity of the FNA II as the ideal fastening solution, our extensive service offering was also decisive," emphasizes Daniel Jäger. "This way, we successfully support our customers through all project phases – from planning and calculation, through pull-out tests in advance, to on-site support at the construction site through training and certification of the construction executors."
