Anchor set for new business district on the coast

fischer facade systems secure building complex of the shopping center in Auckland, New Zealand

Anchor set for new business district on the coast
The new Commercial Bay business district is transforming not only the skyline but also the life in the port city of Auckland, New Zealand. fischer undercut anchors and substructure solutions ensure the permanently secure and concealed fastening of the facades on the buildings of the new shopping centre in the revitalised harbour district.
The new shopping centre in downtown Auckland, which officially opened in June 2020 after five years of construction, offers around 18,000 m² of space for retail, gastronomy, and entertainment. The building complex is located at the foot of a 39-storey office tower with 39,000 m² of space, which, at 180 m high, towers over all the roofs in the surrounding area. Thus, a diverse area of approximately 60,000 m² extends across several buildings.
The progress of the flourishing business district is also reflected in the modern architecture. An important showcase is the natural stone facades of the buildings in the new shopping center. For the planners, it was particularly important that the business district blends into its natural surroundings. The materials, shapes, and patterns used refer to the surrounding landscape with its cliffs and headlands of the nearby Waitemata Harbour. Correspondingly, the fischer undercut anchors securely and concealedly fix the exterior cladding made of Jura limestone on a facade area of approximately 4,500 m² to the fischer substructures SystemOne (BS) and SystemOne light (BSL) – ensuring a harmonious building appearance without visible fastening points. In total, fischer provided 27,500 Zykon plate anchors FZP II 13x26 M8/SO/12 AL and 6,250 special anchors FZP II 11x12 M6/10 A4 for the project from 2017 onwards, all made of stainless steel.

The fischer FZP II provide a form-fitting and completely expansion-pressure-free fastening in the conically undercut drilled hole. Their rear-side installation enables fastening at the fifth point of the facade panel. This technology allows the undercut anchors to achieve particularly low panel bending moments and high load capacities. This made it possible to use thinner and simultaneously large-format limestone panels on the facade of the new shopping centre in the Commercial Bay district. If necessary, the subsequent replacement of individual or all panels is also possible by using the SystemOne (BS) and SystemOne light (BSL) hanging profiles.
I was looking for an alternative solution to clamp and pin fastenings in order to implement the planned façade design. With the fischer undercut anchors and substructure solutions SystemOne and SystemOne light, the requirements of the planners could be met.
